The emergency food assistance program is the main program of the Food Bank RGV. Through our member agencies, we are able to help families in need of food throughout the Valley.
The service area of the Food Bank RGV consists of four counties. There are over 200 member agencies throughout these four counties. The Food Bank RGV delivery trucks are constantly on the road delivering agency orders, picking up donated product, and food drives.
These agencies consist of food pantries, on site feeding centers, soup kitchens and shelters.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program utilizes USDA commodities through the TEXCAP program. In addition, the Food Bank RGV receives product from national food retailers such as KRAFT, Nabisco, and Del Monte through America's Second Harvest. Also off-the-shelf product from food retailers like H-E-B are shipped to FBRGV monthly. In addition, FBRGV distributes fresh produce, bread, and frozen products.
In 2007, the Food Bank RGV distributed over 18.7 million pounds of non-perishable, fresh produce, and frozen product through over 200 member agencies making an estimated 1,300,934 (1.3 million) meals possible annually.
During any given week, some 25,648 different clients are served via Food Pantries*, homeless shelters, on-site feeding programs and after school programs. |
