Capital Campaign - The Need

The Need - Why a new facility?

In spite of recent reports that the economy has rebounded, our food pantries, soup kitchens, and other hunger-relief programs are helping a growing number of people.

The growth of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc. over the last 19 years has been astonishing. Currently, the Food Bank RGV covers eleven counties from Brownsville to Del Rio.  Four of those counties are served by the Food Bank RGV directly.  The other seven are served by the Food Bank RGV's subsidiary distribution organization - The South Texas Food Bank of Laredo.

Through a network of over 200 member agencies that include churches and other nonprofit organizations, the Food Bank RGV distributes food to needy families across the Valley.

From school supplies to nutrition education, the Food Bank RGV has added programs that go beyond just feeding the hungry.  Currently, there are seven programs at the Food Bank RGV of which three are aimed at other areas of assistance besides food.

With all this growth and future direction, the current facility size restricts the Food Bank RGV from running an efficient operation.  Measures to accommodate the growth include renting additional space and using part of the main warehouse for office space.  Furthermore:

The Latest News: Recently, the copper wiring was stolen from the building.  There will be added expense to our Capital Campaign to replace the missing wiring to restore electrical services to the building.

 * The projected growth of the Food Bank RGV is 10-15% per year which requires a substantial increase in facility capacity.

* The projected expansion of nutrition education programs will require an on-site kitchen to conduct demonstrations and hold nutrition classes which also requires a significant amount of facility capacity.
